HOLY MONASTERY
OF THE BIRTH OF VIRGIN MARY OF MESOVOUNI
his monastery is built in a wooded area of fir cones of the village Mesovouni. The local tradition connects the foundation of the Monastery with the finding of a small icon of Virgin Mary on a cedar (Melokedros), which is saved until nowadays, and the branches of which have an inclination towards the church as if they are worshiping it. The today catholic structure of the Monastery, which is a single-naved cross-shaped basilica of Athos type, was built in 1904 on the ruins of the old catholic structure that had the same order. In the new catholic structure is placed the iconostasis of the old one which dates from 1618. During its heyday, the Monastery of Mesovouni was paying the teacher of the village and it was also helping the residents of Mesovouni. After the Royal Decree of the 29th January 1907 (Greek Official Gazette 19/29-01-1907), the Monastery became part of the Monastery of Spilia as a Monastery Dependency.
It celebrates on 8th September.
