THE REGION

ARGITHEA IS THE
WESTERNMOST REGION OF AGRAFA

i.e. of the mountain range of south Pindos and is defined on the southwest by the bed of river Acheloοs and mount Ntelidim, on the southeast by mount Voutsikaki extending transversely towards the direction of the Pindos mountains, on the northeast by the mountain peaks Tympanos and Karavoula which also close its limits on the northwest side. Today the region belongs to the administrative authority of the prefecture of Karditsa and is divided into the municipality of Argithea with the municipal districts of Anthiro, Argithea, Ellinika, Therino, Kalikomi Karya, Mesovouni, Petroto, the municipality of Acheloos with the municipal districts of Argyri, Vragkiana, Katafylli, Marathos and the community Athamanon with the districts of Vlasi, Koumpouriana, Leontito, Petrilo, Petrochori, Stefaniada and Fountoto. All settlements are located on the steep mountain sides of a mountain rage which widespread and naked peaks create a unique image for the visitor. Tympanos peak and Karava peak on the opposite side at an altitude of 2.184m dominate the northeast entrances of the region while Malia (1970m), Mirmitzala, Skafida, Gavel, Kokkino Stefani and Simantro create an awe-inspiring mountain range. The mountain streams cut the soil deep among the folds thus creating canyons connecting stone bridges which are architectural monuments of past times. The region appears to have been populated from the classical period until the late Hellenistic period which is also evident by the widespread remains of fortifications, tombs and houses and also findings. Despite the fact that recordings were found during the Early Byzantine Period regarding the region or its settlements, we may assume with some certainty that Argithea continued its historical presence within of course the general historical restructuring which often were the reason for the desolation and rebuilding of entire regions. The fact that in the first ottoman census from 1454-55 many of its settlements appear to have a developed agricultural and livestock production and to pay significant taxes to the conqueror only supports the above assumption further. The famous convention of Tamasios (Anavra – Karditsa) from 1526, which original text was never found, stipulated the autonomy of the region and restricted the jurisdictions of the conqueror within the region. The period of Ottoman Occupation is filled with battles for the region's independence and its autonomization regarding the armatoliki of Agrafa. During these battles numerous warriors from the region distinguished themselves whose example revived the hopes for the final liberation which occurred in 1881. Law 8040 (PM') of the year 1882 introduced the Greek legislation in the newly freed regions (and in Argithea) and with the decree no: 126 of the year 1883 the region of Argithea became an autonomous municipality class B with Koumpouriana as its capital and a population of 4.888 inhabitants.
